Tulsa, "Oil Capital of the World," is centered in the mid-continent oil fields and Oklahoma's 2nd largest city. A branch of Creek Indians from Alabama settled here around 1832. With the arrivals of the post office in 1879 and the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway, the area of Tulsa began to florish with commerce and people. When oil was struck in 1901, and in 1905, the town's success came almost overnight. Today you can visit the International Petroleum Exposition held every fours, offering displays from all over the world. To see the paintings by Frederic Remington and James McNeill Whistler with Western art and Americana, visit the Gilcrease Museum and the Philbrook Museum of Art offering Italian Renaissance to Native American art. Other places worth seeing are the Philbrook Art Center, the Tulsa Municipal Rose Garden containing over 11,000 roses, 2,700 -acre Mohawk Park, the Boston Avenut Methodist Church, and the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce. Institutes of education include the Oral Roberts University and the University of Tulsa. Also the Old Council Tree can still be seen that held traditional meetings for the early Creek settlers.
