New Jersey's largest city, Newark has become a major transportion center by land, air, and sea. The year of 1666 was the founding year of Newark and it was done by Robert Treat, who led a group of Connecticut Puritans to the settlement. Landmarks include the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart who is taken after the basilica of France at Rheims, the New Jersey Historical Society, and the Trinity Episcopal Church. In front of the Essex Cournty Court House, a bronze statue of Lincoln sits, made by Gutzon Borglum, the sculpture for Mount Rushmore. Also in Military Park, there is a monument called the "Wars of America" made by Borglum too. Visit the Newark Museum offering outstanding collections of arts, science, and industry exhibits, and the Edison National Historic Site. Institutions of education include the Newark colleges of Rutgers University and Newark College of Engineering. Also of interest are the John Plum House, a house that may be over 250 years old, the James Street Commons, featuring Victorian rowhouses, and Symphony Hall to see the New Jersey State Opera and the New Jersey Symphony. One more thing about New Jersey is it brewing of six million barrels of beer a year, giving Newark the title of "Milwaukee of the East." |
