    First settled in 1887, Amarillo serves as the commercial, cultural, and recreations center of the Texas Panhandle. Fifty-six parks provide recreational opportunities. Amarillo was on Route 66 and "Old Route 66" signs mark the route through the area. Amarillo is home of Amarillo College. Amarillo events include: Texas Outdoor Musical Drama, National Old-Timers Rodeo, and Tri-State Fair.

     The Garden Center is located on 2 acres of the 51-acre Medical Center Park. The grounds display elegant lawns, walkways, and decorative floral. A fragrance garden and greenhouse center are also included on the grounds. For the blind there is a touch and smell garden.

     A ranch for troubled youths where boys and girls ages 5-19 have a home. This 10,700-acre ranch is built on the 1870s town site of Tascosa which includes a museum of Old West memorabilia and a barbed-wire collection.

     Helium Monument

     A six story, 60-foot stainless steel monument erected in 1968 for the discovery of helium in 1868. The monument was sealed with 4 time capsules to be opened 25, 50, 100, and 1000 years from 1968. In the 1,000 year time capsule, a $10 savings account was placed in it to be opened in the year of 2968. The account will be worth more than $1 quintillion and the proceeds are to be payable to the Treasury of the United States. Also large quantities of the natural element is located near by.

    Palo Duro Canyon (meaning "Hardwood"). Palo Duro Canyon is the largest State Park in Texas and the nation's second largest canyon. The park contains a spectacular geologic scenic area, geological formation, and a panorama of colors throughout the park. You can view the park's scenery by car, horse, and hiking.
