St. Louis the gateway to the west, offers the Gateway Arch, one of the most magnificent attractions ever to be built in the U.S. Founded by Pierre Laclede in 1764, a French fur trader from New Orleans who established a trade settlement. In 1966, the Gateway Arch is constructed to honor the city where thousands of people stopped to obtain provisions before traveling to the west. The Gateway Arch is contained in the 91-acre Jefferson National Expansion Memorial Park, which also offers other many historic landmarks. Other parks or gardens of interest are Forest Park featuring the Jewel Box, the Shaw Gardens, the Lucas Garden, and the Missouri Botanical Garden. Historical buildings in the vicinity include the Eads Bridge, built by Captain james buchanan Eads in 1867, Laclede's Landing, the Carl Milles Fountain Group, the Cathedral of St. Louis, the Old Courthouse, and the Basilica of St. Louis, the King. Along the Mississippi River there are riverboats named the Tom Saywer and the Becky Thatcher that offer sightseeing and dinner cruises, and the President Casino on the Admiral giving gambling to the community. The area also presents other places to visit which are the Musuem of Westward Expansion, Grant's Farm with amusement rides and shows, the National Bowling Hall of Fame, Busch Stadium, home to the St. Louis Cardinals, the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame, and the world's largest brewer, Anheuser-Busch's world headquarters.
