Best known for the U.S. Naval Base and its fine harbor, Norfolk is home to over a hundred ships and the U.S.S. Theodore Roosevelt, the world's 2nd largest warship. Founded in 1682, Norfolk became one of the largest naval installation areas in the world by an establishment of its Naval Base in 1917. Of historical significance, there is Old St. Paul's Church, the Adam Thoroughgood House, the Douglas MacArthur Memorial in the former 1847 City Hall, the Hunter House Victorian Museum, and Moses Myers House. Explore Norfolk Botanical Gardens or also known as the "Gardens-by-the Sea," containing over 175 acreas of flowers and plants. Also worth visiting are the Hermitage Foundation Museum, the Saclant, the Virginia Zoological Park, and Nauticus, The National Maritime Center.
