Lexington, KY
Lexington Kentucky's second largest city, is the commercial center of Bluegrass Country, a region distinguished by a rich historical heritage that centers on tobacco and Thoroughbred horses. Lexington legacy is clearly defined as the Horse Capital of the World, where white and black fences roam the countryside. Lexington major crop was hemp before the Civil War, used for making rope for ship riggings until the advent of steam power made sailing vessels obsolete. After the Civil War Lexington farmers switched to tobacco as their primary crop.
Tobacco is still the major crop in Lexington, yielding one of the largest crops of burley tobacco in Kentucky. The biggest loose-leaf tobacco market attracts growers, buyers, and spectators to Lexington December through February, when approximately 100 million pounds of tobacco are sold by the rapid-fire chant of auctioneers. The city's is the country's chief producers of bluegrass seed and white barley. More than 50 major Lexington industries manufacture everything from Peanut butter to laser printer by Lexmark.
On the city's outskirts are some of the worlds most celebrated horse farms, where Thoroughbred, Standardbred, American Saddlebred horses and slow champions are bred, reared and trained. Major, equestrian events include, Thoroughbred races at Keeneland in April and October, horse races in late May, the Red Mile Harness Track in September and a Saddlebred horse show in July.
Lexington is also the home of the University of Kentucky Wildcats who are seven time national basketball champions. The Wildcats play at the 23,000 seat Rupp Arena. Other Wildcat sports such as football, baseball and hockey are held at other various stadiums.
The Kentucky Horse Park is a working farm that is an educational theme park dedicated to man's relationship with the horse. Located on 1,032 acres in the heart of the Bluegrass, the park features more than forty different breeds of horses, two outstanding museums, twin theaters and an exciting array of horse shows with special events. The Man O' War memorial burial site of the racehorse is also located on the grounds of the Horse Park.
The Bluegrass tour is guided throughout Lexington and stops at various horse farms such as Keeneland Race Course, Red Mile RaceTrack and the Kentucky Horse Park.
The American Saddle Horse Museum has exhibits and a multi-image theater show tracing the history and current use of the oldest registered American Breed of horse, the American Saddlebred.
The Kentucky Horse Center is considered to be the largest public Thoroughbred training facility where visitors can watch the morning workouts.
The Mary Todd Lincoln House was the girlhood home of Abraham Lincoln's wife. Standing gracefully on West Main Street, this two story, late Georgian structure was the home of the Todd's from 1832 to 1849. The fourteen-room house contains period furniture, family portraits and furnishings from the Todd's as well as the Lincoln's. Part of Mary Todd Lincoln's Meissen collection and personal articles are displayed at the house.
A statue at the Fayette County courthouse stands in the center of the town to honor John Hunt Morgan, a Confederate general adept at conducting guerrilla warfare. Despite his controversial tactic and a series of defeat, Morgan was considered a state hero.
The Lexington Cemetery is home to many buried people. Buried here are the family of Mary Todd Lincoln, Henry Clay and his wife, James Lane Allen, Col. W.C.P. Breckinridge who is also known as the "silver-tongued orator of Kentucky."
